Kiwis in the Sun

With the title you may be expecting a photo of a warm, juicy, sun-ripened fruit...

But no. 'Tis my dog, Kiwi, head out of the window, wind blowing in his face :]

Have a wonderful day!

Global Marijuana March

Oh shoot! It's that time of year, again, and I almost missed it! Every year, first Saturday of May is the Global Marijuana March (GMM) (Wikipedia Article). This is a photo I took last year on May 5.

This is only the third year Dallas has participated in the GMM, and it's hosted by DFW NORML - National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. I attended last year hoping that it would be a rally focused on the actual legalization of marijuana, but many were just shouting "I smoke weed, you should, too!" which is a statement I don't agree with. I don't think that one has to smoke pot to firmly believe in the legalization of a substance arguably safer than alcohol.

So, will I attend this year? Hell yeah. I may not agree with how a few individuals were interpreting the message, but I most definitely stand behind the cause. I put it on the Google calendar [look on the right side] if you want to easily add it to yours.

The "march" is this Saturday, May 3 from "high noon" to 3pm in front of the Earl Cabel Federal Building.

Hope to see you there!

Mornin Y'all

Goooood Morning! You'll never believe...I've taken NEW PICtures! That's right, fresh photos right out of digital land for your viewing pleeeasure :]

Instead of being the responsible young adult that I know is hiding somewhere inside of me and driving back to Dallas at a reasonable hour last night, I opted to sleep in College Station. That meant that I had to wake up around 4am for work at 8am...Horribly foolish [ah, but love]. Knowing myself and my awesome ability to wake up in the morning [sarcasm], I was fully prepared to be 30 minutes to an hour late. I'm really wretched, I know. BUT everything turned out wonderfully.

I woke up and started out on time. I was in the zone for most of the trip but once the sun began to rise...oh my, watching the sunrise. It was as big as my fist in the sky. Breathtaking. I just wish my camera could have captured it as well as my eyes. I stopped to take photos at a rest stop and actually managed to get to work on time AFTER dropping of the dog, fixin' my hair, AND taking my car to the shop [granted the shop is in my work parking lot, haha.] Everything turned out so wonderfully, in fact, that I don't even care that my car is in the shop for some strange noise it started making about, oh, 10 miles into my trek. HA. Talk about a sunrise high, huh?

These three images are the same, but I thought it was neat seeing them all next to eachother and how the cropping changes the attitude of the photo.

Hope everyone starts off their week as wonderfully as I have mine.

Aaahh Dallas...in Mexico?

Okay, so I’m in College Station today - I found a way to see that amazing boyfriend I spoke about earlier :]

I didn’t take any new photos of Dallas…apparently vacation has made me horribly unmotivated…haha. I do have a story about Dallas from Cancun, though. And in honor of that story, I have a photo from Mex-i-co.

In the airport, just having arrived in Dallas, a cute young couple was behind me in line through customs or whatever it is…immigration or something, right? Anyway, we strike up a conversation. Apparently they hate Dallas. Okay, maybe hate is a strong word…but they dislike the city. It’s too “commercialized.” They want to move to Denver or something.
That’s all great and everything, but I was astounded. And frankly, a bit hurt! [Okay, I’m being dramatic.] I love Dallas. There is so much to do in this metroplex. It pains me to think that someone would move away from Dallas and not remember and speak of the place fondly. Absolutely anything one is into...any "scene" one may be interested in, they can find an event or community in the metroplex. All one has to do is invest a little bit of time trying to find it. No one is going to knock on your door and say "Hey, there's this great, cheap event here in a clique you were thinking about and looking for. Please come and join us!"

Okay, not always...I mean, I did start this blog, and I hope people can learn about some interesting and not so advertised things to do in the area. But this isn't exactly a selfless move. I learn things from the people who are reading my blog. For example, Kim just recently commented about the Dallas Farmer's Market which I can't wait to look into. I love to hear about new things in the area, and if anyone ever has any suggestions, PLEASE let me know!

Back to my story, I told the couple everything I've written here, and gave them my myspace url. PLEASE contact me, I said. We can find things to do! I told them. Ha, I hope they do. Really. I love Dallas so much. There's always something to do, and if there's not, there's always walking around downtown with a bottle of wine :P

I hope everyone had a great weekend. I know I did! We went sailing yesterday on a tiny little boat...the whole time I was afraid we were going to tip over! Haha. I'll post a Dallas photo tomorrow. Promise...

Happy Friday!

No, I didn't go on the prowl last night. Yes, this is a photo of yours truly sumer oh six. Come summer, I DEMAND it! I long for this weather. I long for this lake. Sometimes I long for this pink hair and tacky nose ring. A time of no worries, for sure. I’m sure to be breaking some sort of etiquette by putting my own picture on here, but what the hay. Maybe I’m just too conceited to care! Or maybe I really do want this BS weather to calm down into the upper nineties. Or maybe I'm a little preoccupied with being sick, doing post vacation chores, de-fleaing my dog, and trying to figure out how to see my amazing boyfriend that lives 206 miles away from me. Whatever it is, this is the photo today, and I'll let you judge my character :]

This was taken on Lake Lewisville. My friends and I frequented this lake that summer. It's great, I recommend it.

Another thing I recommend if you're in the area is to sign up for the Studio Movie Grill email list. I constantly get free tickets emailed to me, as well as free movie screening invitations. I've received two free movie screening invitations for me and friend in the last week. It's great! With the money you save on a ticket, you can buy an appetizer or something.

Now everyone have a great weekend. I demand it! :]

Update

Ryan's previously mentioned May 7th show is actually June 7th. A Saturday, YAY.

I'm Back!

Good morning everyone! It's a wonderful day in Dallas, though not as sunny as Cancun :] I'm glad to be home. Did anyone go to the Malcolm's Swap? Anything interesting happen around town while I was gone? Let me know for sure! Today I have another photo from Deep Ellum Sellum. Two, actually. One with the flash and one without. I don't know which one I like more. Your comments are appreciated!

I promise some new material this week. I'm going out on the prowl tonight. I hope everyone has a great day!

Deep Ellum Sellum, Where are You?

This is a photo from September 2007's Deep Ellum Sellum. Deep Ellum Sellum is [or, was] an monthly open air market. I've looked everywhere to find some updated information on the event and have found nothing! Maybe it is replaced by Malcolm's Swap? If you find any information, please let me know!

ALSO - Don't forget Malcolm's Swap this Sunday, April 20th!!!

I hope everyone had a great day. I'm pretty sure I'm coming down with a fever. Great! Just in time for vacation! [sarcasm]

A Little History

So I was planning to take some photos of Mockingbird Station yesterday, but I was needed at work until the wee hours of the morning. Therefore, I'm pulling this old photo of my friend Ryan of A Valiant Effort performing at The Prophet Bar, the little back area of The Door. Of course I have an ulterior motive. Ryan has two upcoming performances at the aformentioned Mockingbird Station.

Friday 4/25/2008 8-10 pm
in the Counter Culture store for their "Music Fridays" thing. I’m definitely attending.

and

Wednesday 5/7/2008 1-4pm
in front of the Angelika, sponsored by Counter Culture. I don’t think I’ll be able to make this one because I’ll be working. Maybe I’ll take a late lunch or something.

Both of the events are on the calendar so that you can easily transfer them to YOUR Google calendar because Google is taking over the world.

Thanks!
Hope you guys are having a great day.

Click here to open the calendar in a new window :]

Here is the flyer that the lady at the Sunshine Store gave me. Click the flyer to go the Malcolm's Swap website. It's the third Sunday of every month. Unfortunately I'll be out of town the one on April 20. Hopefully I will be able to make the one on June 15. If you go, please tell me about it!

Everyone needs a little Sunshine...

A sweet little hidden shop on Elm. A nice lady with a cute chihuahua. I bought one of my favorite necklaces there, a bone hand. It's not just jewelery, though, it's a hodgepodge of items from handmade soap to beaded purses. She gave me a flyer for a monthly Deep Ellum Trade "thing" right at Elm and July Alley, but I don't have it with me. I will upload it later. Have a wonderful day. It's perfect here :]

DEEP Gallery Walk

Yesterday was the Deep Gallery Walk. All, or quite a few, of the Deep Ellum art galleries are open at the same time, and they are all within walking distance of each other. It was a beautiful night and a whole lot of fun just for the fact that we were walking around Deep Ellum from 7-9, right as the sun was setting.

This was taken on Elm Street.

Tornader!

So, I figured today was as good as any to start a Dallas Daily Photo Blog. North Dallas was hit by a tornado-like thing in the middle of the night. I say tornado-like because I've heard that it was everything from "straight high winds" to an F1 tornado. Anyway, it caused a decent amount of damage. Of course, I'm on the very edge of the grid that didn't get their power back until 7pm, but all is well, now. I took these on my lunch break :]

Meet my dog, Kiwi. He was really excited that the fence between our apartment complex and the park was knocked down.
